Das Projekt erstellt eine digitale und gedruckte Ausgabe einer der wichtigsten Quellen zur Frömmigkeits- und Geistesgeschichte des Spätmittelalters. ”Die vierundzwanzig Alten” bieten in 24 Kapiteln eine mys- tisch grundierte christliche Lebenslehre von enzyklopädischem Charakter. Jedes Kapitel enthält die an die minnende Seele gerichtete Rede eines der 24 Alten, die sich in der Offenbarung um Gottes Thron scharen (Apc 4,4) und denen daher ein besonderer Zugang zu Gott zugesprochen wird. Behandelt werden Themen des täglichen Lebens (angemessenes Sprechen, korrekte Kleidung, richtiges Beten etc.), das We- sen Gottes und der Menschen sowie der Tod. Im Zentrum (12. Alter) steht ein ausführliches Marienleben. Nach Umfang und Verbreitung handelt es sich um eine der wichtigsten Quellen zur volkssprachlichen Katechese, zur Geschichte der deutschen Mystik und damit zur Frömmigkeits- und Geistesgeschichte des Spätmittelalters überhaupt. Wohl aufgrund der breiten Überlieferung (163 Handschriften und 14 Drucke) fehlt eine moderne Ausgabe. Auf Grundlage der ältesten Handschrift Karlsruhe, Landesbib- liothek, Cod. St Georgen 64 (1383, ostalemannisch) wurde in einem ersten von der DFG geförderten Projekt ein Referenztext erstellt. Dieser wird in einem Folgeprojekt, in dem auch ausführliche Quellen- und Wortschatzuntersuchungen durchgeführt werden, zu einer Hybrid-Edition erweitert.
