In the course of the project the works of the so called “Austrian Bible translator”, who created a comprehensive bible-translation and commenting about 200 years before Luther, are edited and made accessible. Since the 14th century, the “century of the layman-bible”, large parts of the Latin Vulgate and the accompanying exegetic and catechetic explanations have been increasingly translated into German and presented to an ever-expanding public. Among these pre-reformational translations, the Oeuvre of the “Bible translator” is of particular importance, as he strove for a comprehensive translation and explanation using the latest Latin scientific literature. The peculiarity of the work lies in its linguistic brilliance and its completeness It consists of numerous individual parts of the bible, but also heresiological tracts and defences. Another special feature is the accompanying commentary, which represents the contemporary text comprehension. Additionally, it was a layman who oversaw the translation and who simultaneously turned against contemporary heretics and defended himself against attacks from Orthodoxy. The comments are moreover testimonies of contemporary critique of philosophy and superstition. The work of the interacademic project takes place in two work groups, a bigger one set in the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Augsburg (Project Leader: Prof. Dr. Freimut Löser, deputy Prof. Dr. Jens Haustein) and a smaller one set in the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (Project Leader: Prof. Dr. Martin Schubert, deputy Prof. Dr. Jens Haustein).

Prof. Dr. Jens Haustein).
