Edition
eng Kommentierung und Gesamtedition der Werke von Karl Jaspers sowie Edition der Briefe und des Nachlasses in Auswahl
Karl Jaspers (1883-1969) is one of the most important German speaking philosophers of the 20th Century. He graduated in medicine, habilitated in psychology, and was, until his dismissal through the NS-Regime in 1937, tenured professor in Heidelberg. In 1948, Jaspers accepted the professorship at the university of Basel, where he taught until his retirement in 1961. "Wahrheit ist, was uns verbindet", is one of his key phrases. Jasper’s thinking is applied to the attempt of orientation in an ideologically susceptible world that has become questionable, following the humanistic heritage of the "great philosophers". Jasper was, as a metaphysician, cofounder of the existential philosophy and a prominent critic of the German post-war politics. The Karl-Jaspers-Gesamtausgabe (KJG) presents his complex oeuvre for the first time as a whole. All of Jaspers publicized records, relevant posthumous publications as well as selected, previously unpublished texts of his legacy and correspondences are imprinted down in three sections: writings, legacy, letters. The volumes are designed coherently and contain, besides the text corpus, an introduction as well as a commentary. Another core focus of the editorial work is the discovery and systematic indexing of comprehensive materials from his legacy in cooperation with the Karl Jaspers Foundation in Basel. The KJG is a joint project by the Heidelberger Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the Academy of Sciences and Humanities Göttingen.
