From 2020 to 2022, the ISGV-based project “Social Heritage. Post-socialist associations of former GDR company collectives between traditionalization and new communitization” focused on the experiences of former company employees in the social contexts of the GDR working world and their transformation after 1990. As part of the project, a total of 38 topic-based and biographical interviews were conducted in which the experiential dimension of company-related change was recorded and the emergence of new forms of communitization (associations, interest and support groups, etc.) was reconstructed. Using examples from the Vogtland and Upper Lusatia, the interviews and the accompanying materials (interview transcripts, photographs) provide deep and differentiated insights into subjective interpretations of the transformation period and the collective efforts to preserve work-related knowledge and material legacies of the companies and document them for posterity. The focus is on former employees of Margarethenhütte in Großdubrau, Plauener Maschinenbau AG (Plamag) and employees of Schaustickerei Plauener Spitze. The project was part of the joint project “Multiple Transformations.  Social Experience and Cultural Change in East Germany and East Central Europe before and after 1989”, which was carried out by four humanities institutes (Leibniz Institute for the History and Culture of Eastern Europe, Hannah Arendt Institute for Totalitarianism Research, Sorbian Institute and ISGV). Funding was provided by the Saxon State Ministry for Science, Culture and Tourism. Translated with DeepL.com (free version) eng
