The ancient Egyptian funerary texts are one of the most important and extensive literary areas of this culture. Three large collections of texts - roughly arranged according to time and place - define them: the pyramid texts of the Old Empire, the coffin texts of the Middle Empire and the Book of the Dead from the New Empire until the Roman times. In contrast to pyramid and coffin texts, the latter was also provided with numerous pictures (vignettes) and its text and picture inventory was handed down for about 1600 years. While the Ancient Egyptian pyramid and coffin texts are each available in a basic text edition, the Book of the Dead is the only one to have a synoptic edition that is more than one hundred years old. It does not allow an exact work on the sources listed there, nor does it even approximately cover the range of the text and image corpus handed down over time. The research project, which is the result of a DFG project in Bonn, is therefore dedicated to a basic publication of the Ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead, which will take the form of individual editions of relevant sources (papyri) within the series "Handschriften des Altägyptischen Totenbuches". The basis for the edition is provides by an archive in which all existing sources are to be documented and which is already the largest archive on the Book of the Dead in the world. In addition, the texts of the Book of the Dead will be lemmatically fed into a relational database in order to make the texts on the Book of the Dead available for further research (indexes etc.), but also for the "Altägyptisches Wörterbuch" project of the Berlin Academy. The establishment of a prosopographic database, parallel to the archive, the collection of relevant literature for a current bibliography of the Book of the Dead and the publication of the series "Studien zum Altägyptischen Totenbuch" as a general forum for research on the Book of the Dead complete the aim of the project.

Die Totenliteratur Altägyptens ist einer der wichtigsten, umfangreichsten und bislang zu wenig beachteten Literaturbereiche dieser Kultur. Drei große Textsammlungen - nach Zeit und Anbringungsort grob geordnet - bestimmen sie: die Pyramidentexte des Alten Reichs, die Sargtexte des Mittleren Reichs und das Totenbuch aus dem Neuen Reich bis hin zur Römerzeit. Letzteres wurde im Gegensatz zu Pyramiden- und Sargtexten auch mit zahlreichen Bildern (Vignetten) versehen und in seinem Text- und Bildbestand rund 1600 Jahre lang überliefert. Während die altägyptischen Pyramiden- und Sargtexte immerhin in jeweils einer grundlegenden Textausgabe vorliegen, existiert für das Totenbuch einzig eine über hundertjährige synoptische Edition. Sie erlaubt weder ein exaktes Arbeiten an den dort aufgelisteten Textzeugen noch umfasst sie die zeitliche Überlieferungsbreite des Text- und Bildcorpus auch nur annähernd. Das Vorhaben, das aus einem Bonner DFG-Projekt hervorgegangen ist, widmet sich deshalb einer grundlegenden Herausgabe des Altägyptischen Totenbuches, die in der Form von Einzeleditionen relevanter Textzeugen (Papyri) innerhalb der Reihe "Handschriften des Altägyptischen Totenbuches" geschieht. Als Editions- und Arbeitsbasis dient ein Archiv, in dem sämtliche vorhandenen Textzeugen dokumentiert werden sollen und das schon jetzt als das weltweit größte Archiv zum Totenbuch zu gelten hat. Außerdem werden die Totenbuchtexte lemmatisch in eine relationale Datenbank eingespeist, um den Textbestand des Totenbuches für weitere Arbeiten (Indizes etc.), aber auch für das Unternehmen "Altägyptisches Wörterbuch" der Berliner Akademie bereitzustellen. Der Aufbau einer prosopographischen Datenbank, parallel zum Archiv, die Sammlung einschlägiger Literatur für eine jeweils aktuelle Totenbuch-Bibliographie und die Herausgabe der Reihe "Studien zum Altägyptischen Totenbuch" als allgemeines Forum für Totenbuch-Untersuchungen runden das Aufgabenfeld des Unternehmens ab.
